Events
We love to host events in our dedicated classroom space and welcome-all living room! Whether it is a workshop, class, learn-along, or just a casual club or meetup, we'd love to have you come and join us.
Starting in September our classes, workshops, and learn-alongs are all now pay-what-you-want, to make them accessible to as many people in the community as we can. If we have a guest instructor, 100% of donations received for the class go to them. If it is an in-house instructor, all proceeds go to a fund to help us to get more materials or equipment for future classes and to pay future guest instructors, so that donations for a class always fund more classes. $5 - $20 is our suggested donation amount, but any amount is welcome, even $0. Most classes will not have the materials included, so these can either be brought from home, or can be purchased in the shop.
Class space is limited to 5-10 participants, depending on the class. If you would like to reserve a seat, just send an email to skyler@callowfibers.com with your name and the name and date of the event that you want to reserve a seat for.
Our clubs, meetups, First Friday, and Show & Tell events are always free; no donation expected.
Below is our current event calendar. Click on an event to learn more or to sign up

Sat, Oct 10 12-5pm - Hand-Painted Yarn Dye Drop-In Workshop
Special collaboration with Spindling Crow, our neighboring yarn shop on Callow!
Let's dye some yarn! Hand-painted yarn dyeing is a technique that involves applying bits of dye by hand to various parts of the yarn in order to achieve blends, fades, and other effects, just like painting with dye! In this drop-in workshop, you'll get the chance to try it out for yourself. We'll go through soaking and painting the yarns together, then we'll send you off while we heat set, wash, dry, and hank up the yarns for you over the next week.
Dyeing will all be here, at Callow Fibers, but pickup will be at Spindling Crow up the street at 631 N Callow Ave, about a week later. We'll collect your contact info during the workshop so that we can let you know when your yarn is ready for pickup!
Dye, tools, and equipment for this class are all provided, but you'll need to bring in your own yarn. Bring a 100g hank of clean, undyed wool yarn (must be wool or another protien fiber, or the acid dye we are using will not take). If you don't have some undyed wool yarn ready, you can buy some from us or from Spindling Crow.
Please wear appropriate clothing for dyeing, it can be a messy activity!
Suggested donation: $5-20.

We have a variety of different sewing machines for use in our classroom, but feel free to bring your own machine if you've got one lying around! Materials for the project will be provided. Expect this class to take 60-90 minutes.

Food is welcome, so feel free to bring something from one of our neighboring establishments, like Sweet Dahlia, right next door!
Sat, Oct 17: 2-3pm - Mosaic Crochet Class
There's more than one way to make a crocheted panel that features color-changing motifs and detail, and this class is going to focus on the technique commonly known as "overlay mosaic". Learn the techniques and stitches required, as well as how to read patterns and weave in all those pesky ends. We'll be following along with a basic pattern in class, and while we probably won't finish it during the class, you'll leave with everything you need to tackle this and more complicated patterns on your own!
This class assumes that you know basic crochet stitches (single crochet, double crochet), but otherwise is very beginner-friendly.
Materials for this class are not included. You will need:
- Two yarns of the same weight in contrasting colors. Pick something with good stitch definition.
- A crochet hook of matching gauge.
If you don't have these things, or need help picking out the right ones, come on in to the shop and we would be happy to help! We also have a limited amount of yarns and hooks that you can borrow for the class, just ask and we'll reserve some for you.
Suggested donation: $5-20.
Sun, Oct 18: 2-3pm - Pixel Art Cross-Stitch Class
This class will go over the basics of how to transform some pixel art into a cross-stitch masterpiece! Great for beginners and more experienced stitchers alike.
Materials for this class are not provided, so you will need to bring:
- A pixel-art piece to transform into cross-stitch. We recommend keeping it small, especially if you are new - even a 16x16 sprite is 256 stitches to do. Fewer colors (think Game Boy) can also be fun and an easy place to begin.
- Cross-stitch fabric
- Embroidery floss in the colors you need
- A needle or two(size 24/26 tapestry needle recommended)
- A hoop (5 or 6 inches recommended)
Feel free to bring materials that you already have in your stash, or of course you can buy anything you are missing right here in the shop. We also have a limited selection of flosses, hoops, and needles that have been donated which you can borrow for the class if need be - just reach out and let us know what you need and we can reserve something for you. And we'll have some example pixel-art patterns that you can work off of if you don't have one in mind.
Suggested donation: $5-20.

Sat, Oct 24 10-11am - Pin Loom Learn-Along
Did you know that you can make your own pin looms, and use those looms to make quick, tiny weavings that you can piece into larger weavings? Well you can! All you need is some hardware store brads and cardboard, along with a crochet hook to weave it up!
In this learn-along, we're going to try out this technique together. Once you've figured out how to make your own pin looms, you can work with any gauge of yarn you like, and make whatever shapes you want, and combine them however you like to make beautiful woven patchwork items like shawls, table runners, stuffed animals, even sweaters or blankets.
We'll supply the brads, carboard, and glue, but you should bring:
- Some scrap yarn. You don't need much; smaller pin looms can work up a piece with only a few yards of yarn.
- Something to weave with. A slim-handled crochet hook, latch hook, or even a large tapestry needle can all work.
If you don't have these, of course we sell them in the shop, or we have a limited number of hooks and some scrap yarn that you are welcome to use for the class.
Suggested donation: $5-20.
Sat, Oct 24 5-8pm - Calloween Trick-or-Treating
Throughout the Charleston Business District (around Callow & 6th), businesses will be giving out candy to trick-or-treaters and will be hosting a variety of fun games and activities! There will be a live DJ, a costume closet, photo booths, and more! You don't want to miss this exciting and spooky night!
At Callow Fibers, we'll be giving out candy and also free Bad Face Painting! If you've ever wanted your face painted by someone with no skills at face painting then this is the moment you've been waiting for! Requests are welcome: you tell us what you want, we'll do our best, and then you can see if your friends can tell what it is you were actually going for!
Sun, Oct 25: 2-4pm - Sew a Docker Hat Class
In this class, we'll sew up our very own Merchant and Mills Docker's Beanie! This class is for those who have machine sewing experience and who would like to grow their skills or make a stylish hat for themselves (or as a gift).
Our classroom has sewing machines, scissors, irons, and other tools that you can use (or you are welcome to bring your own), but you'll need to bring the pattern and your own materials:
- The printed pattern. This pattern is not free, and only available digitally, so you'll need to buy it from Merchant and Mills and print it out to bring with you. If you don't have access to a printer, we will happily print it for you if you email us the pdf.
- 3/4 yard fabric for the outside (or 1/2 yard for fabrics 55" wide or wider)
- 1/4 yard fabric for the lining (optional)
- 5 inches of 3/4" wide elastic
- Matching thread
Recommended fabrics for the exterior are mid-weight wovens like oilskin, canvas, denim, or similar for the exterior. Of course, if you don't already have a fabric that you want to use in your stash, we sell a variety of suitable fabrics in the shop and would be happy to help you find something that you love!
Suggested donation: $5-20
